reactant (CH4, O2) and product (e.g. H2O, CO2, CO) concentrations were
monitored by an online MKS FTIR gas analyzer (MultiGas 2030)
connected to the reactor exhaust. Before introducing the reactor exhaust
gas into the MKS FTIR gas cell, the gas flow was diluted 10 times with Ar
to increase the response time of the MKS FTIR (total flow was 300 sccm).
CH4 conversions and CH4 oxidation turnover frequencies (TOF) at 400 C
were calculated using Eq. (1) and Eqs. (2-3), respectively.

The apparent activation energies (Ea) of the studied catalysts and supports
were measured by varying the catalyst bed temperature from 340 to 440
C while keeping the feed gas concentration constant to CH4:O2:Ar = 1:5:9
and XCH4 < 15%. The total flow was 30 sccm with GHSV ~ 18,000 mLg-
1h-1. The feed gas mixture was first stabilized in the reactor bypass line
and then switched to the catalyst bed where it was kept in steady state for
2 h. The apparent activation energies were calculated using the Arrhenius
equation.
Stability tests and the impact of reaction products (H2O, CO2) were
performed by maintaining the catalyst bed temperature at 450 C while
changing the feed gas composition as described below. The catalyst was
exposed to dry conditions (CH4:O2:Ar = 1:5:9) followed by sequential
introduction and removal of 5% H2O and 5% CO2 into the feed gas to
determine the ability of the catalyst to recover its activity. The catalyst was
maintained in each of these conditions for 8 h.
