General Experimental Information. Unless otherwise noted, all
the organometallic compounds were prepared and handled under a
nitrogen atmosphere using standard Schlenk and glovebox techniques.
Dry and oxygen-free solvents (THF, ether, CH2Cl2, and pentane)
were collected from an Innovative Technology PS-MD-6 solvent
purification system and used throughout the experiments. C6D6 was
purchased from Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc., and distilled
from a dark purple solution of Na and benzophenone under a nitrogen
atmosphere prior to use. CH3CN was dried using CaH2 and stored
over 4 Å molecular sieves. CD2Cl2 was dried over molecular sieves.
Substrates 1-hexene, cis-2-hexene, trans-2-hexene, cis-3-hexene, trans-3-
hexene, and allylbenzene were obtained from Sigma-Aldrich. PONOP
ligands were prepared as previously described.8 Mo(CO)3(CH3CN)3
and W(CO)3(CH3CN)3 precursors were prepared as described in the
literature.28 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectra were recorded on Bruker
Avance 400 and Avance 500 NMR spectrometers. Chemical shift
Synthesis of [iPrPONOP]W(CO)3 (2d). This compound was
prepared from 1b (88 mg, 0.256 mmol) and W(CO)3(CH3CN)3
(100 mg, 0.256 mmol) with 86% yield (134 mg). X-ray-quality crystals
were grown by allowing a layer of pentane to slowly diffuse into a
saturated THF solution of 2d at −30 °C. 1H NMR (400 MHz, C6D6):

General Procedure for the Synthesis of the PONOP
Molybdenum and Tungsten Hydrido Tricarbonyl Complexes
(3a−d). Under a nitrogen atmosphere, to a 5 mL CH2Cl2 solution of
2 (0.172 mmol) was added HBF4·Et2O (44 μL, 0.174 mmol, 54% w/w
in diethyl ether). The resulting light yellow solution was stirred at
room temperature for 1 h and then dried under vacuum to afford an
oily residue. Upon washing with diethyl ether (∼10 mL), a solid
material was obtained, which was further dried in vacuo to afford the
title compound.
General Procedure for the Synthesis of the PONOP
Molybdenum and Tungsten Tricarbonyl Complexes (2a−d).
Under a nitrogen atmosphere, 10 mL of THF was added to a mixture
of 1 (0.330 or 0.256 mmol) and M(CO)3(CH3CN)3 (0.330 or 0.256
mmol, where M = Mo and W). The resulting clear yellow solution was
stirred at room temperature for a day and then dried under vacuum to
afford a yellow powder. The crude material was washed with ca. 20 mL
of cold pentane (−30 °C) and further dried in vacuo to yield the title
compound as a yellow solid.
