The luminescence properties of Yb2+ in some oxidic host lattices have been investigated. In some host lattices the Yb2+ luminescence is quenched (aluminates, silicates, oxides) while in other host lattices Yb2+ luminescence is observed (halides, borates, sulphates, phosphates). A prediction of whether or not Yb2+ will show luminescence can be made by considering the luminescence properties of Eu2+ in the same host lattice. The lower quenching temperatures of Yb2+ luminescence are explained by the lower stability of Yb in the divalent state in comparison with Eu2+ in these host lattices.
