A photo-reaction between thionine and NADH has been observed which leads to the oxidation of the co-factor.Thionine (fluorescent), which is converted into semi/leuko thionine (non-fluorescent) during light reaction, fully recovers during the dark reaction.Analytical applications of this discovery are discussed.This reaction opens the door to the measurement of NADH using the fluorescence quenching of thionine and to the construction of several optical biosensors.
