An efficient one-step thiamine catalyzed synthesis of furil and its analogues

By employing thiamine (vitamin B₁) as the catalyst, a new 'one-step' method for the synthesis of furil from furfuraldehyde has been developed. The method proved to be very promising in preliminary studies thus indicating that several other diketones such as 2,2'-pyridyl-, 2,2'-thenyl- and benzyldiketones can be obtained efficiently by the same approach. Additionally, it avoids the use of sodium cyanide, and shows much higher yields when compared to conventional methods.
