5-Hydroxyalkenes react with rhenium(VII) oxide (Re₂O₇) to provide 2-hydroxymethyltetrahydrofurans. Oxidative cyclization occurs with overall syn addition to the alkenes in moderate yields with little tendency toward oxidation of alcohols to carbonyl compounds.
