Solid fluoride complexes of pentavalent uranium are formed by heating UF5 with ammonium or alkali fluorides under anhydrous conditions. A series of complexes having MF:UF5 ratios (M = NH4, Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs) of 1:1, 2:1 (except Li and Na), and 3:1 (except Li) were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. These white to pale blue compounds exhibit characteristic absorption in the 1.3 to 1.5 μ region.
