Pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC), in refluxing benzene, has been found to be an effective and convenient reagent for the oxidation of steroidal Δ⁵-3β-tetrahydropyranyl ethers to the corresponding Δ⁴-3,6-diones in high yield.
