The rate constants for hydrogen atom abstraction from tri-n-butylgermanium hydride by the 5-hexenyl radical, k5, have been measured in octane as solvent at temperatures varying from 233 to 393 K.Over this temperature range the data can be represented by log k5 (M-1 s-1) = (8.44 +/- 0.47) - (4.70 +/- 0.62)/θ, where θ = 2.3 RT kcal/mol.At ambient temperatures this germanium hydride is only about 1/20 as reactive toward primary alkyl radicals as the corresponding tin hydride.This should make it a useful probe for slow alkyl radical rearrangements.
