Nitrogen Analogues of o-Xylylenes

The gas-phase pyrolysis of o-hydroxymethylanilines provides simple, one-step syntheses of acridines, acridones, and quinoline derivatives.The ease with which nitrogen analogues of o-xylylenes are formed during pyrolysis suggests that the methodology currently used in the synthetic applications of benzocyclobutenes can be employed with these azo-o-xylylenes to yield a variety of heterocycles and polycyclic amines.
