Treatment of 2-halodecanal and potassium ethyl malonate under phase-transfer catalysis condition gave ethyl tetrahydro-4-(ethoxycarbonyl)-2-octyl-5-oxo-3-furanacetate in one step.This compound was successfully converted into dihydro-4-octylfuro<3,4-b>furan-2,6(3H,4H)-dione, which is an important key intermediate for the synthesis of dl-avenaciolide.
