The electrochemical reduction of Co offers a route for the production of fuels from inorganic sources. Also, since CO and CH//3OH are potential intermediates in the reduction of CO//2 to CH//4, information on how they are reduced is important with respect to the mechanism of CO//2 reduction. Electropolated Ru metal electrodes have been shown to be good catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of CO//2 to CH//4. The authors report results that show ruthenium electrodes can reduce both CO and CH//3OH to CH//4 under conditions similar to those for the reduction of CO//2 to CH//4.
