New Syntheses of Chloro-Substituted Derivatives of Tropone

The Diels-Alder reaction of donor-substituted 1,3-dienes with tetrachlorocyclopropene leads to novel bicyclo<4.1.0>heptenes, which on acidic hydrolysis and oxidation yield a new series of chloro-substituted derivatives of tropone by way of elimination of hydrogen chloride concerted with an electrocyclic opening of the three membered ring.
