assumed that the conformation of one BOACl24 molecule first
changed via the rotation of benzoxazole ring around CC single
bond in excited state. Therefore, the topophotochemical reaction
underw ent betw een tw o different conformational isomers of
BOACl24 to afford DBOACl24. To best of our know ledge, such
photo-induced [2+2] cycloaddition betw een tw o conformational
isomers has not been reported elsew here.

In summary, shape-dependent photo-induced bending, curling,
rolling and salient behaviors of the molecular crystals of
BOACl24 w ere observed. Interestingly, the reversible
controllable bending of the needle-like crystals aw ay from the
light source driven by [2+2] cycloaddition w as observed, w hich
was resulted from the slow release of the strain accumulated by
the movement of the atoms during photodimerization of
BOACl24. We also found the photosalient effect of the crystals
based on metal-free olefin BOACl24 on account of the rapid
release of the strong internal strain originated from the photo-

photomechanical motion has seldom been reported in organogel,
the nanofibers in methanol organogel of BOACl24 w ere found to
curl under UV irradiation. In particular, w e found a rotation of
benzoxazole ring around CC single bond upon UV irradiation
before photodimerization, so that [2+2] cycloaddition took place
betw een tw o different conformational isomers of BOACl24.
Such topophotochemical reaction has not been reported yet,
which is favorable for revealing the reaction mechanism of [2+2]
cycloaddition as w ell as for the green synthesis of desired
cyclobutane derivatives. Therefore, the highly organized
photoreactive molecular crystals not only can be employed to
control and manipulate photoreactions but also serve as a
platform for realizing the transformation of light energy into
mechanical motion.
