A new synthesis of tricyclic ketone 21, which has been carried on to (+/-)-isocomene (1), is described.The key intermediate, tricyclic dione 3, was formed by the acid-catalyzed cyclization of diketo acid 11.Several methods of differentiating the carbonyls of diketone 12 were studied.The monoprotected diketone 18 led in three steps to 21.
