The use of γ-alumina and exchanged Y-zeolites as catalysts in the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexanol by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) has been studied. With γ-alumina, cyclohexanone is formed, whereas the zeolites NaCeY and NaLaY give cyclohexyl formate as the main product. This compound is thought to originate from a zeolite-mediated rearrangement of tBHP to acetone and methanol, oxidation of methanol to formic acid and electrophilic addition of formic acid to cyclohexene (formed in situ from cyclohexanol).
