The enthalpy of formation of 1,1-diphenylgermanocyclopentane and an assessment of the strain in the ring system

The compound (C6H5)2Ge(CH2)4 has been burnt in an aneroid combustion bomb and the enthalpy of sublimation measured by a combination of d.s.c. and effusion: Δ_fH⁰_m<(C6H5)2Ge(CH2)4, cr> = (34.3 +/- 10.0) kJ * mol^-1; Δ_fH⁰_m<(C6H5)2Ge(CH2)4, g> = (138.9 +/- 10.5) kJ * mol^-1.The gas-phase molar enthalpy of formation has been used to investigate strain in the ring system.
