A two-step transformation of saturated hydroxysteroids into oxasteroids is described; the reaction involves photo-reaction of the hypoiodites of the hydroxysteroids generated with mercury(II) oxide and iodine to give isomeric formyl esters , which are cyclized to oxasteroids with sodium borohydride.
