(VO)2P2O7 is an active phase for selective catalytic oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA). In situ Raman investigation of (VO)2P2O7 and IR observation of low temperature adsorption of CO demonstrated that the surface redox process between (VO)2P2O7 and X1 phase occurred in a reversible way under the flow reaction conditions on the selective oxidation of n-butane when the butane/oxygen ratio in the feed varied. The state of surface became very close to that of X1 phase and was distinctly different from that of β-VOPO4. After the reduction of the oxidized (VO)2P2O7, the surface recovered, indicating that the redox cycle between (VO)2P2O7 and X1 phase also proceeded reversibly on the surface. (VO)2P2O7 showed a high MA selectivity. However, when butene and butadiene were used as the feeds, the selectivity of (VO)2P2O7 was comparable with or less than that of α- or β-VOPO4.
