butyl moiety is replaced by tert-amyl, by 1,1,3,3-tetramethylpropyl, or by
1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl groups. In addition, the aliphatic peroxyesters will
be applied as initiators in ethene high-pressure polymerization to investigate
whether and to which extent the mechanistic differences in unimolecular
decomposition mechanism, single-bond scission vs. concerted two-bond
scission, translate into differences in initiator efficiency. Part of these stud-
ies is already underway.
Acknowledgements
The authors are grateful to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for finan-
cial support of this study within the Sonderforschungsbereich 357 (“Mole-
kulare Mechanismen unimolekularer Prozesse”). The intense cooperation
enjoyed with AKZO NOBEL, in particular with Dr. B. Fischer, Dr. J. Meij-
er, Dr. A. van Swieten, and R. Gerritsen, is gratefully acknowledged, as is
the synthesis and provision of the peroxide samples.
