In condensed-phase studies of methane aromatization, a
consensus that the formation of C intermediates via C−C
coupling is essential for further cyclization to produce aromatics

characterized. The detailed elementary steps involving methane
activation and further transformation of CH into acetylene via
C−C coupling exclusively occurring over the active cluster of
x

FeC
reveal a molecular level origin of the monofunctional
mechanism for non-oxidative methane aromatization proposed
in condensed-phase systems.
