tion in their size, although “magic number” effects may also
be present [38].

The heterogeneous reduction of tetrachloropalladate and
1
tetrachloroplatinate at the water/DCE interface has been
studied: this is the first report, to our knowledge, of plat-
inum deposition at the ITIES. Characterisation of the de-
posits formed by both metals indicates that particles with
mean diameters in the range of 3–5 nm are formed, with plat-
inum particles being slightly smaller than the palladium par-
ticles. Despite the thermodynamic preference for platinum
reduction, the kinetics of the reduction process indicate that
palladium is more readily formed: it is suggested that dif-
ferences in the surface energies of the nascent metals may
be responsible for this phenomenon. The alumina template
is shown merely to act as a restriction on the agglomeration
of the particles. Further quantitative studies of platinum and
palladium deposition at the ITIES using combined electro-
chemical and spectrophotometric approaches are currently
underway [12,39].
