New chemical hydrogen storage materials exploiting the self-sustaining thermal decomposition of guanidinium borohydride
Groshens, Thomas J.,Hollins, Richard A.
, p. 3089 - 3091 (2009)
Guanidinium borohydride (GBH) was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and found to release more than 10 wt% H 2 as a fairly pure stream during a self-sustaining thermal decomposition reaction both with and without add
Hydrogen Liberation from Gaseous 2-Bora-1,3-diazacycloalkanium Cations

, p. 7910 - 7916 (2017)
Evidence is presented for cyclization to yield 2-bora-1,3-diazacycloalkanium cations in the gas phase. While the neutral compounds in solution and solid phase are known to possess an acyclic structure (as revealed by X-ray diffraction), the gaseous cations (from which borohydride BH4- ion has been expelled) have a cyclic structure, as revealed by InfraRed Multiple Photon Dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and collisionally activated decomposition (CAD). The IRMPD decomposition of the monocyclic ions proceeds principally via H2 expulsion, although CAD experiments show additional pathways. Pyrolyses of solid monomeric salts and small oligomers produce higher polymers that are consistent with H2 expulsion as the major pathway. Deuterium labeling experiments show that scrambling occurs prior to IRMPD or CAD decomposition in the gas phase.

Ammonia borane, NH3BH3 (AB), is very attractive for hydrogen storage; however, it dehydrogenates exothermally, producing a mixture of polymeric products with limited potential for direct rehydrogenation. Recently, it was shown that AB complexed with Al3+ in Al(BH4)3·AB endothermically dehydrogenates to a single product identified as Al(BH4)3·NHBH, with the potential for direct rehydrogenation of AB. Here we explore the reactivity of AB-derived RNH2BH3 (R = ?CH3, ?CH2?) with AlX3 salts (X = BH4-, Cl-), aiming to extend the series to different anions and to enlarge the stability window for Al(BH4)3·NRBH. Three novel complexes were identified: Al(BH4)3·CH3NH2BH3 having a molecular structure similar to that of Al(BH4)3·AB but different dehydrogenation properties, as well as [Al(CH3NH2BH3)2Cl2][AlCl4] and [Al(NH2CH2CH2NH2)(BH4)2][Al(BH4)4], rare examples of Al3+ making part of the cations and anions simultaneously. The latter compounds are of interest in the design of novel electrolytes for Al-based batteries. The coordination of two ABs to a single Al atom opens a route to materials with higher hydrogen content.

Paragraph 0033; 0034, (2017/12/05)
The invention belongs to the technical field of material preparation, in particular relates to a method for the production of amine borane complex. This invention adopts the borane amine of the direct reaction of an inert gas stream, by regulating the ratio of the two, the need for further post-processing, to make the final product amine complex and offer. In the reaction process such impurity is introduced into the salt-free, does not use an organic solvent; the use of borohydride such as the reagent to produce the borane, for now the current system, can avoid direct operation of toxic gas borane. The method of the invention is simple in operation, the product has high purity, low cost, and can be continuous large-scale production. At the same time, the method and other way to produce the amine borane complex equipment compatible, production equipment by simple method can be used to adjust the production. supporting information, p. 16869 - 16872 (2015/01/09)
Complexation of amines with borane converts them to hypergols or decreases their ignition delays (IDs) multifold (with white fuming nitric acid as the oxidant). With consistently low IDs, amine-boranes represent a class of compounds that can be promising alternatives to toxic hydrazine and its derivatives as propellants. A structure-hypergolicity relationship study reveals the necessary features for the low ID.
Procedures for the Synthesis of Ethylenediamine Bisborane and Ammonia Borane
-
Paragraph 0015; 0017, (2013/09/12)
A method for synthesizing ammonia borane includes (a) preparing a reaction mixture in one or more solvents, the reaction mixture containing sodium borohydride, at least one ammonium salt, and ammonia; and (b) incubating the reaction mixture at temperatures between about 0° C. to about room temperature in an ambient air environment under conditions sufficient to form ammonia borane. Methods for synthesizing ethylenediamine bisborane, and methods for dehydrogenation of ethylenediamine bisborane are also described.
