In this study, we have designed and synthesized novel betaine dyes with clear structural confirmation using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and UV–Vis analyses. For these betaines, we investigated their hydro-, iono-, thermo- and solvato-chromic sensor properties through UV–visible spectral changes and visual color changes. We observed hydrochromic properties in solution state by adding 3% water (V/V) and we checked solid state hydrochromic sensing property through betaine-embedded PEO film. For ionochromism, we used an equimolar concentration of salt to dye in solution. Thermochromic sensing studies were performed in a temperature range from 50 °C to −10 °C, and solvatochromism properties were investigated by increasing polarity using solvents from DCM to DMF. Finally, the experimental results were supported with theoretical studies.
