Micellar behaviour of n-alkyl sulphates in a buffered medium at different temperatures

The CMC of sodium n-octyl, n-nonyl, n-decyl, n-undecyl and n-dodecyl sulphates in glycine buffer solutions at pH 3.2 were precisely determined at 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C by an electrical conductivity method. For each of the surfactant—solvent systems investigated the values of the CMC in each surfactant were lower than the equivalent values in the absence of glycine. CMC values decrease with the increase in the length of the alkyl chain, this variation being a linear function of the number of carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain. The CMC variation with temperature shows a minimum between 20 and 30°C. Thermodynamic data for micelle formation derived by application of the mass action model are presented.
