Extraction of Cadmium from Aqueous Solution Using 1,3,4-Thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol (cas 132120-63-9)

1,3,4-thiadiazole-2,5-dithiol (TDH2) has been used to precipitate cadmium from aqueous solution. The rate of extraction is rapid (t1/2 ca. 2 min.). A Scatchard plot has 2 clear regions which have values K1 7.2 × 106 (n1 38 mM M−1) and K2 3.2 × 106 M (n2 290 mM M−1). The first region is probably associated with (Cd TDH+) solid formation and the second with (Cd TD)n (a polymer). Clear regions are seen even thought the equilibrium constants are comparable. Related polymeric and amine compounds are unable to extract cadmium efficiently and it appears likely that polymer [CdTD]n formation is important in the extraction process.
