Low temperature dielectric relaxations in ammonium hexachlorostannate and some other antifluorites

Dielectric relaxations of A2MCl6 compounds, with A = NH4, ND4, K, Rb, Cs and M = Sn, Pt, Ir are attributed to the hydroxyls in MCl5OH2− groups which normally constitute ca 2% of the anions present in the material unless it has crystallized in strongly acid conditions. Hydroxyls reorientate by 90° jumps about the tetrad axis near the line joining the covalently bonded M arid O atoms, a motion which is strongly coupled to the anion rotary mode. Weaker relaxations of partly-deuterated (NH4)2SnCl6, (NH4)2PtCl6 and (NH4)2GeF6 are attributed to reorientations of mixed-isotope ammoniums.
