The development of a new FRET OFF → ON system to the colorimetric and ratiometric sensing of azide ions is described. The sensor is based on an oxazolone-pyrimidinone dyad, containing both oxazolone and pyrimidinone linked through a conjugated triazole spacer prepared by Copper (I) catalyzed [3 + 2] Azide-Alkyne click Cycloaddition (CuAAC). Careful design of the donor pyrimidinone establishes good overlap for its emission spectrum with the absorption spectrum of the acceptor oxazolone moiety and thereby controlling the FRET on/off process upon addition of azide ions. The new sensor exhibits typical dual emission signals in the blue and green wavelength region characteristic to the changes in the azide concentration and facilitates the ratiometric and colorimetric sensing of azide ions through the “OFF → ON” FRET process.
