A new opine, cucumopine, has been identified by high voltage paper electrophoresis in hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Cucumopine gives a positive reaction with the Pauly imidazole reagent, the phenanthrene quinone reagent and alkaline silver nitrate. This substance was also found in spontaneous grapevine crown gall tumors. It is degraded by A. rhizogenes and by grapevine isolates of A. tumefaciens. Cucumopine was purified from carrot hairy root culture supernates and grapevine crown gall tumours.
