The conditions for growing single crystals of mercurous halides have been examined on the basis of solid-liquid-vapor equilibrium data. The physical vapor transport (PVT) growth method has proved suitable for growing large single crystals, although inhomogeneity in the materials' refractive indices is still an issue. The composition range for growing these crystals has been suggested on the basis of thermodynamic analysis of solid-liquid equilibrium data. Hg-rich source material was found to be better for growing high-quality crystals.
