A study has been made of the copolymerization of styrene and butyl methacrylate with diethyl maleate and dibutyl furmarate in the presence of oxygen. It is shown that diethyl maleate and dibutyl fumarate participate in oxidative copolymerization not as comonomers, but as chain transfer agents. This is attributed to features of the mechanisms of oxidative homopolymerization of these compounds.
