The infrared spectra of carbamic acid: aryl-, alkyl esters in CCl4 and CS2 solution have been studied. It has been found that those N-phenyl carbamates containing an ortho halogen atom (F, Cl and Br) or φ group form intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the N-H proton and the unshared pair of electrons on the halogen atom or the π system of the φ group. Characteristic frequencies are presented for the N-H, CO, aryl and R groups in these molecules.
