5α-cholest-8(14)-en-3β-ol and three 24-alkyl-Δ8(14) -sterols from the bulbils of Dioscorea batatas

Four Δ8(14)-sterols, 5α-cholest-8(14)-en-3β-ol, (24R)-α- and (24S)-β-epimers of 24-methyl-5α-cholest-8(14)-en-3β-ol, and (24R)-α-ethyl-5α-cholest-8(14)-en-3β-ol, in addition to 24-methylene-25-methylcholest-5-en-3β-ol and 13 other sterols were isolated and identified from the bulbils of Dioscorea batatas. This appears to be the first report for the identification of the four Δ8(14)-sterols in a higher plant.
