SummaryThe host-specific phytotoxin victorin (cas 11026-16-7) was purified from culture filtrates of Bipolaris victoriae by solvent extraction, alumina adsorption chromatography and reverse phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Victorin activity was associated with an HPLC fraction containing a peak of absorption at 254 nm; by several criteria this ultra-violet (UV)-absorbing peak was identified as victorin. Victorin purified by HPLC ran as a single ninhydrin-positive spot in several thin-layer chromatography (TLC) systems. Purified victorin inhibited susceptible oat (Avena sativa) root growth half-maximally at 0.1 ng/ml, yet did not significantly inhibit resistant oat root growth at 50 g/ml.
