The synthesis of the cobalt hydrides of formula CoH(CO)4—n[P(n-C4H9)3]n (n=2, 3) are described and their chemical and spectroscopic properties are discussed. The complexes homogeneously catalyze the hydrogenation of alkynes and aldehydes and isomerization of olefins. These reactions are discussed in relation to the aldehyde hydrogenation catalyzed under hydroformylation conditions by the Co2(CO)8 system modified with P(n-C4H9)3.
