p-Methylstyrene from toluene and acetaldehyde

High yields of p-methylstyrene (PMS) were obtained by coupling toluene and acetaldehydes, then cracking the resultant 1,1-ditolylethane (DTE) to give equimolar amounts of methylstyrene and toluene. In the first step, a total DTE and ‘trimer’ yield of 98% on toluene and 93% on acetaldehyde was obtained using 98% sulfuric acid as catalyst at 5–10 °C. In the second step, a choline chloride-offretite catalyst cracked DTE with 84.0% conversion and 91% selectivity to methylstyrene and toluene. The methylstyrene fraction was about 95% PMS, with the balance being the m-isomer. Additional PMS was obtained by cracking the byproduct ‘trimer’ formed by coupling DTE and toluene with acetaldehyde. Zeolite-Rho catalyst was as active but yielded less methylstyrene (86%) and produced more p-ethyl-toluene (PET), an undesirable byproduct.
