1.1. A study was made of dimerization of styrene and α-methylstyrene with phosphoric acid at 130 to 135° resulting in the formatiion of four theoretically possible cyclic hydrocarbons: 1-methyl-3-phnylindane, 1,3-dimethyl-1-phenylindane, l,l-dimethyl-3-phnylindane and 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane.2.2. Ions obtained from styrene and α-methylstyrene interact with styrene 2.1–2·8 and 1·3–3 times respectively more easily than with α-methylstyrene. As a results, l,l-dimethyl-3-phenylindane yield exceeds almost 4 times that of 1,3-dimethyl-1-phenylindane.
