The effects of six triaryl phosphate compounds on the primary productivity of pure algal cultures and natural phytoplankton in lake water were tested. Substitution of the hydrogen atom by a methyl group in the benzene ring decreased its effect. Triphenyl phosphate was the most toxic compound, followed by tolyl diphenyl phosphate, tritolyl phosphate and trixylyl phosphate. The ortho-isomer of tritolyl phosphate was more toxic than the meta- and para- isomers. Natural phytoplankton was more sensitive to triaryl phosphate compounds than the pure algal cultures. In addition to the primary productivity, the reproduction and nitrogenase activity of the algae were also reduced in the presence of triphenyl phosphate.
