Vibrational and conformational analysis of 2-methylpentane (cas 107-83-5) and 3-methylpentane

Vibrational spectra have been obtained for 2-methylpentane (cas 107-83-5) and 3-methylpentane, and are interpreted with the aid of normal coordinate calculations. It is shown that 2-methylpentane exists in two molecular conformations and 3-methylpentane exists in four conformations. Transferred force constant values resulted in an overall average difference between observed and calculated wavenumbers of 5.0 cm−1 for the six conformers of these two compounds.
