Publisher SummaryThis chapter covers the chemistry of pyridazine and its benzo derivatives; and a useful background review of the chemistry in this area in the period 1982-95 is available. The hydroformlation reaction can be tuned by a suitable choice of catalyst and reaction conditions, thus allowing the preparation with high selectivity of one of the two possible isomeric aldehydes and a variety of metal ion-pyridazine complexes have been prepared and their structures, properties and reactions are studied. The biological activity review describes the use of the pyridazine system as a potential substitute for aromatic moieties in antithrombotic, antiviral and antitumor agents. The synthesis and biological activity of the heterocycles fused tetrahydro pyridazine herbicides, such as (165, X = O, S) is reviewed. The miscellaneous applications of the compounds discussed are presented in the chapter.
