The aqueous coordination chemistry and the structural chemistry of beryllium are reviewed focusing on simple fluoride, aquo, hydroxo, oxo, and peroxo complexes. Complex formation with the heavier halide and chalkogenide anions plays no role in aqueous solution. Formation and structure of beryllium carboxylates, oxo carboxylates, dicarboxylates, hydroxy-carboxylates, carbonates, phenolates, enolates, and polyolates under various pH regimes are also considered in the context of the bioinorganic chemistry of beryllium. The coordination chemistry of beryllium with amino acids is almost completely unexplored.
