The addition of haloalkanes to alkenes in the presence of [RuCl2(PPh3)3] has been subjected to a detailed kinetic study. The results of this study, together with an examination of reaction intermediates, suggest a mechanism inolving a non-chain sequence in which [RuCl2(PPh3)3] acts as a catalyst, but which involves free radical intermediates.
