The ionization constants of acetarsone (pK1 = 3.73, pK2 = 7.9, pK3 = 9.3) and arsthinol (9.5 ± 0.1) have been determined potentiometrically in aqueous solution and the UV spectra of the individual conjugate species have been deduced. Assignment of the second ionization step of acetarsone to the phenolic proton is made. Hydrolytic atmosphere oxidative cleavage of arsthinol in alkaline aqueous solution to produce acetarsone has been demonstrated and spectrophotometric assay methods for these two substances are proposed.
