Adsorption of 5-alkyl derivatives of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole and their effect on the passivation of copper have been studied in neutral buffer solution using polarization, ellipsometric and XPS techniques. Triazoles are capable of forming passive layers on the copper surface at very low concentration. The adsorption of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole derivatives is described by the Temkin equation and the values of free adsorption energies increase with increasing of the length of alkyl. The layers formed by 5-alkyl-3-amino-1,2,4-triazoles provide protection of copper under the impact of salt spray. The mixtures of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole derivatives can show the higher performance than each of the single component.
