The resolution of the phosphorescence from 1,4,5,8-tetrachloronaphthalene improves when changing from glassy solution to mixed crystals. However, the energy and lifetime of the emission vary with the crystal host. This sensitivity to the host is rationalized by assuming that crystal packing forces increase the strain energy and decrease the π, π singlet character present in the emitting triplet state.
