Moderate consumption of red wine with meals may lead to a wide array of health benefits through the primary prevention of some important chronic diseases as cardiovascular disease, diabetes or through a lower risk of mortality. Heavy and binge drinkers are recommended to change to a Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern. Harmful effects of this drinking pattern have not being specifically reported, but as moderate alcohol intake may entail potential risks, precaution is required for the recommendation to abstainers.
