Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the history, abundance, distribution, and production of cobalt, rhodium, and iridium. Rhodium and iridium are rare elements, comprising only 0.0001 ppm and 0.001 ppm of the earth's crust, respectively. Cobalt is widely distributed in the earth's crust, but it stands only 30th in order of abundance. The chapter provides an overview of the applications and uses of cobalt, rhodium, and iridium. The largest use of cobalt is in the production of chemicals for the ceramic and paint industries. Cobalt compounds are also employed as catalysts in a range of organic reactions of which the hydroformylation reaction, hydrogenation, and dehydrogenation reactions are the most important. Iridium is used in the coating of anodes in chloralkali plants and as a catalyst in the production of acetic acid. The main uses of rhodium are catalytic. The chapter also discusses the physical properties, chemical reactivity, and group trends of cobalt, rhodium, and iridium.
