Sparfloxacin is a third generation, broad spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Its main advantages over older fluoroquinolones are improved activity against gram-positive pathogens and a long half-life that allows for once a day dosing. In comparison to other fluoroquinolones, sparfloxacin has enhanced in vitro activity, especially against gram-positive cocci and anaerobes. Sparfloxacin is effective for the treatment of adults with community acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by susceptible organisms and sinusitis. While its adverse effects are generally similar to other fluoroquinolones, it is more phototoxic. Sparfloxacin was withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer in 2001.
