4-Methyl-3-heptanone: Identification and role in opilionid exocrine secretions
-
Add time:09/04/2019 Source:sciencedirect.com
4-Methyl-3-heptanone has been identified as the main constituent present in the secretion from the scent glands of the opilionids Leiobunum formosum and L. speciosum. The contents of the scent glands are discharged when the opilionids are irritated and can function as an effective defensive secretion against invertebrate predators such as ants. The significance of 4-methyl-3-heptanone being utilized as a defensive secretion by arachnids is discussed in the light of the role that this compound plays as an alarm pheromone of myrmicine ants.
