All of the four possible stereoisomers [(4S,5R)-, (4R,5S)-, (4R,5R)- and (4S,5S)-isomers] of 5-hydroxy-4-methyl-3-heptanone (sitophilure) were synthesized from methyl (R)-3-hydroxypentanoate of microbial origin.
